He obviously had taste once to buy a Legend but he's owned it 18 months and fitted the new alloys 9 months back and new tyres 18 months ago. I wonder who butchered what appears to be a Lincoln bonnet mascot into a Honda "double-crosswire" and sprayed it gold before gluing it to the bonnet?

Quite tempting as an ongoing project :

Quite a good price but has cosmetic problems. "Private" plate might be worth almost the purchase price though! ;):D

Hmmm, interesting Dave.  The plate looks like it's worth the purchase price like you say although the ad doesn't say that the plate is included.  <_<   Not sure of the age but it's got a cassette player!  No mention of mileage, servicing, etc and the problem with the steering sounds like £££ to fix, then again it could just need to PAS fluid change?  It's £299 for a reason me thinks.  <_<

Very true Geoff - it doesn't say the plate isn't included though. The PAS could simply be a loose belt and only noticed on right hand lock as they don't turn left on full lock very often. High mileage at 188472 miles though but if the engine is quiet then that shouldn't be a problem. Here's what the DVLA say about it :

There was a similar one in Wales that seems to have disappeared from fleabay for £295 and i think that was on an "N" too. Perhaps the value of the "non-minters" has dropped while the nice ones still command good money? Similar happened with the 800 a few years back, now even the rough ones are going for good money so maybe there are some ex-800 owners moving onto the Legend now as a viable alternative to a 75 or other similar modern machinery.

Apparently it has a CD changer in it as well as the radio-cassette which for 1996 was pretty good kit.

Yes, agreed, back in them days a CD changer was coveted (as was leather etc) and shows how good the Legends were even back then.  I've always liked the Legend, I know Stu likes them too.  You get a lot of motor for your money, still prefer the Coupe though.  ;)

Back then in-car CD players were still new - the CD system had only been on the market officially since June 1986 in the format we know it. The Rover Sterling, like the Legend got a 6-disc changer mounted in the boot and as you say, things like leather, electric windows, Climate Control etc were all status symbols back then. Now they're on even the most basic of cars :(

Was just thinking - if that Vigor/Inspire had been produced by Ford in the 70s it would have been a Cortada and would no doubt now have a cult following. It would be an even deeper money-pit though as all the parts would be subject to the dreaded "Blue Oval Tax" - a self-imposed surcharge Ford owners seem willing to pay for parts for their cars.

Isn't marketing an amazing tool?

You're not wrong.  "Is the car imported?"  "Yes".  "Your monthly premium with be £1,000 PM with £5,000 voluntary excess, when would you like the policy to commence?"

Click.  Receiver goes down as just collapsed in shock!!

Great stuff.  That could be addition to the Member Services Topic Stu, perhaps a list of insurers that we all use, contact numbers etc and also other more specialist insurers too for these grey imports, classic cars perhaps?
