The solenoid screens were clogged (I did take some pic's cant find them ATM), adding some additives helped in the first instance and follow-up reported its running great in the new car. 😁

I'm really pleased you got to the bottom of it and it's helping someone else to keep there's on the road. That a proper win!

    Good effort Stu.

Well the car is booked for collection this week, it has supplied many parts to several coupes now and I'm pleased to say saved a couple of better examples too. Its sweet running engine is off to Germany, to swap with another which the cambelt snapped. Additionally, my newfound confidence, that I found the issue with the transmission was proved correct, as it has since been fitted to another car and works flawlessly. 😁

So what was up with the gearbox Stu?

Why did it have such a viscous nature when I had it? There were days when it felt like I was back on my 350 LC.

Happy to hear it fixed a few cars up.

*It did one nightime trip across Germany, mostly with 220kph on the clock. Ate the miles up like I eat fish and chips.

Glass removed today, N.S rear quarter glass practically fell out and held on with silicone sealant. The rear window on the N.S was leaking and plenty of rust developing too.

Even the rear radio antenna wasn't connected, so somebody has been there before and bodged it. 😡

Radio never worked, that'd be why then!

Ruby has fought me even more than Baldrick so time to move on me thinks. 😔

It shows just how valuable a car as good as Flex will eventually become - it's only a couple of years since Lovey/Baldrick was flying around the Alps, up and down the passes and cruising across Germany at 220mph. There must be quite a few V6s out there that are living on borrowed time now...

I hope the next project goes better.

    Thank you very much guys!

Yeah I already had issues with the wrongly crossreferenced parts when I had to change the ac pump, was a bit of a headache to find the correct part anywhere, in a correct price as well. I did get the wrong one first (autodoc), luckily they took the wrong part back that time.

I think I'll go with the euro car parts, as the autodoc is out of stock, and car is in daily use, even it says it's for shuttle/prelude, I know some parts are actually good for the coupe cg4.

On the other hand, what do you think about taking that car for longer trips, like crossing europe, Hungary there and back? I would say it is one of the most realible car from it's age I had, but not as easy to get specific parts as for a passat of the same age. But I guess it comes from the fact it's a rarity in comperison, but that's one of the reason I love it as well.

I do want to use that car for many years come, but on the other hand I am a bit worried about the parts supply and to take it out of the country, as may not be easy to fix, get parts abroad if anything goes wrong on the trip.

I tooky CG2 over the Alps a couple of times pre covid - no issues at all and even had a lovely 220kph constant blast across Germany one night. European recovery is linked to car value, so I'd say that's were you need to start, perhaps a fixed value classic insurance. I was quite happy to travel without recovery tho.

That alternator doesn't seem to be doing its job , the battery at 9 volts, no charge going in there unless battery had it too.

I would say it was running on battery alone when you were out, all those lights/problems are almost certainly down to the low battery voltage.

Exactly that - battery had recovered to 11.97v when I went out, would turn over but not start. I've got the battery on charge currently. I'll take the alternator out on Tuesday, it was working fine yesterday and it can go back.

As for Lovey, my time is over.

Yep, easy job though, you might want a few clips for replacement... there are only four bolts on it, 8mm and 10mm, two of each and about ten push fit clips.

Whole thing slides off easily and will rest on the deck, on a sheet or something, no pipes to disconnect, even the headlight washers pipes can stay on.

Took me about ten minutes to get off due to difficult clips and 1 bolt being seized.

You might be lucky and find the contacts are the problem as Paul and I have found..

    Cheers fella.

To be honest, fitted the rebuilt alternator yesterday, drove to work and stuff fine. Just went out this afternoon, the car starts playing up, gearbox horrendous, abs light on, so I head home.

Battery reads 9v. I think I'm done with her now. It's been one little nigggle after another for the last 18 months and a lot of money. I think I'll offer her to Stuart like I did originally.

    The time has come.

Good to know. Not that far from me either. Had I known Daventry was within your travelling distance I might have suggested Sheltune in Northampton. Always took my starter motors there years ago.

The guy who did Sheltune's has retired - in fact, they're all looking really old in there now!

  9. So I had the alternator rebuilt - at a place called Electro Start Ltd in Daventry, a small unit nestled near the Cummins and Ford factories.

The guy was super knowledgeable, hadn't seen this Honda one but reeled off some similar and then had a hunt for a new one. Couldn't locate one, saying the Autodoc one is slightly different but did find one on eBay that he thought "might" be the same but the picture weren't clear.

    So £100 + parts + vat.

All genuine parts from Denso, bearings, regulator, rectifier etc and all bolt in place. I'll take a picture later but it looks fabulous.

Total cost £168 and I know it's the right one.

Googled Alternator and Starter Motor repairers but got 100's locally.

Saw a quote for alternators ranging from £45 - £85 so £100 for a brand new one seems good value. Be mindful of import duties though!

Spoke to a few local places advertising alternator repair but all sent them to the same guy who's just retired - I'm sure there'll be someone. I'll check with Knights in Nether tomorrow.
